The board of the Division of Inorganic Chemistry of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) assigned to Dr. Matteo Cargnello the award for the best Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry for 2012 (XXIV Cycle). He discussed his Ph.D. thesis entitled "Tailored nanoarchitectures based on transition metals for heterogeneous catalysis " on March 2012, supervisor Professor Paolo Fornasiero and tutors Dr. Tiziano Montini and Professor Ray Gorte. The board evidenced the highly innovative character of the nano structured core-shell catalysts synthesis methodology developed in the project. Such materials open new perspectives for the production of hydrogen and syn-gas, thus making the result of the thesis of great impact in the scientific community. Dr. Matteo Cargnello will be awarded on September 13, during the National Meeting of the Division of Inorganic Chemistry in Sestri Levante. Dr. Matteo Cargnello has now a post-doctoral position at the University of Pennsylvania (Upenn), with professor Christhopher B. Murray.

The Second Edition of the book "Renewable Resources and Renewable Energy: A Global Challenge", edited by Paolo Fornasiero and Mauro Graziani, is now available. In its first edition, this book presented a well-rounded perspective on the development of bio-based feedstocks, biodegradable plastics, hydrogen energy, fuel cells, and other aspects related to renewable resources and sustainable energy production. The new second edition builds upon this foundation to explore new trends and technologies. The authors pay particular attention to hydrogen-based and fuel cell-based technologies and provide real-world case studies of renewable energy projects in the emerging Asian and South American markets.

March 2008
Ceremony of affiliation with the National Research Council (CNR)
On March, 18, the official ceremony of Research Unit location will be held at the Department of Chemical Sciences with the participation of the Rector, Prof. Francesco Peroni, and the Director of the Institute of Chemistry of OrganoMetallic Compounds, Dr. Claudio Bianchini.

Affiliation with the National Research Council (CNR)
From January 2008, the Department of Molecular Design of the National Research Council (CNR) has established a new Research Unit located at the University of Trieste - Department of Chemistry. The new research centre is associated with the Institute of Chemistry of OrganoMetallic Compounds (ICCOM) of Florence, coordinated by Dr. Claudio Bianchini.
This represents a turning point in a fruitful scientific collaboration between researchers at the Chemistry Department, and in particular the research group of Professor Mauro Graziani, and various CNR research centres. A stronger and more scientifically productive interaction is expected on the base of the possibility of sharing a large number of advanced instruments.
The research activities will be initially focused on the following topics:
- hydrogen production from reforming reaction of oxygenates;
- development of components for fuel cells;
- use of templating polymers for nanostructured catalyst preparation.

January 2007
Mauro Graziani and Paolo Fornasiero have recently edited the book:
Renewable Resources and Renewable Energy: A Global Challenge.
The book first examines the transformation of bio-based renewable feedstock
into valuable, clean, and economically attractive products. It explains the
catalytic processes involved and surveys the relevant commercial technologies
that are available. The book highlights how these technologies can be used for
efficient waste management solutions, particularly for the synthetic polymers
industry, as well as energy production. The authors also pay particular
attention to current trends for hydrogen-based and fuel cell-based
technologies and provide real-world case studies of renewable energy projects
in Asia and South America.
